Hi, I'm Nicholas!

I'm Nicholas Holman, a full-time artist who creates work that's often described as colorful, whimsical, surreal, and a little magical. My paintings blend elements of nature, dreamlike imagery, and bold color to capture feelings we don't always have words for.

I love working across many mediums: gouache, watercolor, acrylic, oil, and illustration because experimenting keeps my creativity fresh and evolving. I'm especially known for playful projects like my "eggs on things" series and collections that explore unique color palettes, such as my all-pink works.

For me, art is about more than just the final piece: it's about connection and storytelling. Whether it's through sharing my process on social media, painting live, or exhibiting at shows and markets, I love creating moments where people can connect with art in an authentic and accessible way. Some of my favorite experiences have been meeting people who chose one of my pieces as their very first original artwork.

Looking ahead, I'm excited to create a course that goes beyond teaching technique. I want to share not only how I use paint and illustration, but also how I approach creativity, color, and imagination, encouraging others to explore their own voice and embrace a sense of play in their art.

The course has 8 modules and 40+ video lessons for 7+ hours of learning and practicing. You can pause and replay the videos as much as you want. The course is suitable for everyone (teens, adults and children) because there is no explicit content. It's best to take the course in order, as it starts from the basics and goes up to more advanced levels.

Modules 1–2

Getting Started with Gouache

Get to know your supplies and how gouache behaves: water control and consistency, what each brush does, drying times and textures. Let's get started!

Modules 3–4

Color & Value

Mix the colors you'll actually use from three primaries (skies, greens, earth tones, shadows, greys and blacks without black), then master value with one-color and three-value studies.

Modules 5–6

Landscape Elements & Composition

Paint trees, clouds, rocks, grass and florals with brush economy, then plan foreground, middle ground and background, focal points, edges and atmospheric perspective.

Modules 7–8

Landscape Studies & Painting Outdoors

Paint warm, cool and neutral landscapes, find compositions within a reference photo, and take your gouache outside for longer guided studies.

In all my videos, I try to use as many visual elements as possible, such as pictures and references, so you can take some inspiration and you can practice. You can follow each step as I show it to you, and you can comment and compare with other students under each video or in the group so you can resolve any doubts you have and learn new tricks!

The course is designed to be as practical as possible, even teaching you the basics of color and how to use the tools. You can review the lessons as many times as you want, where you want, and when you want!
